Eighth month of the lunar calendar.
-----

There are various theories on the origin of the word Hazuki.
It is generally believed to be an abbreviation of haochizuki, the month in which the leaves of the trees turn red and fall off.
Another theory is that it refers to the month in which fields of rice are ready to produce ears of rice.
Many of the names have more of an autumnal feel to them than a summer one.
Names derived from birds are also interesting.
Swallows fly to Japan in spring to raise their young. Then, around the eighth month of the lunar calendar, they cross over to the south and spend the winter there. This is where the nickname '燕去月(the month of the swallow's departure)' comes from.
In the old days, geese used to come everywhere in Japan in exchange for swallows, so August was also called '雁来月(the month of the coming of the geese).’
