The correct kanji for kakitsubata was originally “燕子花”, but it is now often written as “杜若”. (originally a different species).
It is the prefectural flower of Aichi Prefecture, and is said to be the place where Ariwara no Narihira composed a poem about the kakitsubata in “Ise Monogatari” (The Tale of Ise)

The saying, “It's either the AYAME
or KAKITSUBATA,” is well known.
It means that both are the same and difficult to distinguish between them. It also refers to the fact that it is difficult to choose one over the other.
Iris” and ‘kakitsubata’ are both members of the same iris family and are difficult to distinguish from each other.
● Subcul Little Tips
A character named Kakitsubata appears in Blueberry Academy in Pokémon SV.
He is from Souryu City, which has a Dragon-type gym, the same as the Pokémon he uses, and the gym leaders Shaga and Iris are also named after plants in the iris family.
On the rinlife WEB page “にほんご Subcul Little Tips”, the KUDEN staff will be sharing “Little Tips(MAMECHISHIKI)” – little tidbits designed to help you enjoy Japanese subculture, such as anime and manga, even more – with a focus on the Japanese language and from our own unique perspective!

Q. Which character comes to mind when you think of a plant name?
Kakitsubata is the name of a plant, isn’t it?
If you can think of any other people or characters named after plants, please do let us know in the forum!
By the way, I… thought of Sakura-chan 🌸 (Cardcaptor Sakura, Sakura Matou from Fate, etc.)
We look forward to your comments!
