The kimono has always been, and remains today, a simple “One Design.” While sharing the same design, the fabric and pattern adapt to different occasions and seasons. Tailored from a single bolt of cloth, it is remade as the wearer grows, passed down from parent to child, and from child to grandchild—a long-life design. KUDEN by TAKAHIRO SATO is a brand born to reconnect the DNA of kimono with contemporary lifestyles. The starting point of the design lies in the strong ethical conviction that “kimono should once again become ‘everyday wear’” and that “fashion that sacrifices someone else is not cool.” This essay explores the Samurai Mode Series—KUDEN's proposed “Next Kimono Platform” —unraveling the social issues behind it and the designer's personal story through a timeline and primary sources.
