■ 2. Catch up

Hello everyone.
My name is Takahiro Sato, aka Tak, and I am a designer.
Nikko, where I live, was hit by a huge cold wave, and the whole area turned white with snow in a single day.
I put the stove outside and am shoveling snow with my son and staff members, and in between, I am writing this article.

Well, this week, I am in the final stages of designing KUDEN's new "KIMONO Gown" (tentative name), which has been in the works since last week.

I had already designed a work jacket and pants with a Japanese taste that would be highly mobile and stowable for travel and business trips (I am thinking of naming the highly functional clothes for travel and business trips the Ninja series, not Samurai), but after listening to the requests of our overseas customers, I designed a kimono gown (tentative name) first, in response to their requests for KUDEN clothes that can be worn as a single piece in a kimono style.

Based on the Samurai Mode Linen Light Jacket, we have made it into a single garment (Hitoe) so that it can be worn lightly as a sunshade by customers in Japanese summer and hot countries .

*Kimonos can be divided into two main categories.
The “Awase" type is lined with two pieces of fabric sewn together, and the “Hitoe" type is lined with only one piece of fabric.

There is a belt on the back of the gown like a trench coat, so if you wrap the belt around the gown, it can be worn as a kimono style gown alone.

I am also planning to add side pockets, which are not found on kimono.

In addition to the rollable arm function that was well-received in the Samurai Mode Linen Light Jacket, it is also designed to be worn as a kimono gown with a beautiful silhouette that does not make the shoulders look fat.

The fabric will be made of a material that is cool even in summer.

I would like to be able to produce a version in another fabric, such as wool, for fall and winter while keeping the design the same.

I am enjoying designing the garments, as I think it is the best way to show my skill in designing and pattern-making so that the strength and wearability of the garments are not compromised by the difference in fabrics.
I will be able to show you a rough design next time.

Thanks for reading.
See you next time.

Tak

■ 3. What is traditional Japanese culture?|Performing arts, crafts, events, food, clothing, and housing

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
During the Edo period (1603-1868), many artisans, including woodworkers, moved to Nikko when the Nikko Toshogu Shrine was being built.
I was born in such a place, and in my childhood, I had a lot of contact with various artisans. There was a skilled knife smith who lived in the neighborhood where I was born and raised, and he took care of me from a young age and taught me how to forge knives.
This experience is the starting point of inspiration for my designs, as I love to make things.
Japanese traditional culture. I will introduce the arts, crafts, events, clothing, food, and shelter from a designer's point of view.

【The World of Ningyo Joruri Bunraku - a Traditional Japanese Performing Art - 】

In this first issue, we would like to introduce Ningyo Joruri Bunraku.

“Ningyo Joruri Bunraku puppet theatre”

Blonged Institution or organization : Ningyo Joruri Bunrakuza
Designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property (Performing Arts) on May 12, 1955

”Ningyo Joruri Bunraku is a music drama in which puppets are manipulated to the accompaniment of gidayubushi, a form of shamisen music, which reached its peak in the 18th century. The three-man operation of a single puppet enables the puppet's realistic movements, and together with the joruri, the puppet shows a high level of artistry on the stage. Ningyo Joruri Bunraku is a representative traditional performing art of our country and was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1955.”
Quotes from Cultural Heritage Online.

Ningyo Joruri Bunraku.

I have been interested in Bunraku for a long time, but I never had a chance to see it, and when I saw it for the first time last year at the National Theatre in Tokyo, I was hooked by the depth of this truly comprehensive entertainment!
I was hooked by the depth of this truly comprehensive entertainment.

The first time I saw Bunraku puppet theater was for charity.

We were asked by the radio station Nippon Cultural Broadcasting Inc. to sponsor the KUDEN Charity, so we thought, "Why don't we make something to promote the charity?".
I thought, "Why don't I make a spot commercial with only the voice of the characters that the teachers drew for me? I was faced with the difficult task of writing a script for a 40-second announcement and voice drama, but I had to include a synopsis and an announcement in the limited time of 40 seconds (radio commercials are often 40 seconds long, not 30 seconds like TV commercials)! I had to put a synopsis and an announcement in the limited 40-second time frame!

The only thing that had been decided was that Kazuhiko Inoue and Rune Sasaki, voice actors who willingly participated in the charity event, would voice the characters.
The worldview of the character design to be drawn by the teachers is based on two subjects: a SF adventure story about swords and wearing KUDEN clothing, and we need a script to express 40 seconds in that worldview using only voice.

As I racked my brains and pondered various ideas, I was struck by the Gidayu-bushi of Bunraku puppet theater, which I had been interested in for a long time.

Why don't you ask Rune Sasaki to play the role of a female gidayu?

From there, the character of Run Sasaki's mysterious female gidayu (Aisha, who later appears in the novel, was designed by Mr.Shijoh) was born, and the script was written with the female gidayu played by Run Sasaki as a rhapsodist who tells the synopsis and other details.

Charity, novels, and that is how we came to ask Mr. Sakijudayu Toyotake, a handsome young tayu of Bunraku puppet theater, to be our ambassador.

To be continued next week.
