This August, Singapore celebrated it’s 60th year of independence since 1965, its diamond jubilee. Incidentally, the Japanese Cultural Society (JCS) also celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024, and 2026 will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore. Looking at this time line, it is easy to deduce that there has always been individuals with a strong interest in all things Japanese, so much so that the Cultural Society was established by locals here even before Singapore became a nation of its own. Much has changed since the sixties and with the evolving times came evolving interests.
