Kaga Gosai - Traditional 5 colors of Kagayuzen

Kaga Gosai - Traditional 5 colors of Kagayuzen - KUDEN by TAKAHIRO SATO

What do you imagine when you hear the word "Japanese Kimono"?
There are so called "brands" or " styles" depending on the technique and the place of production, The most famous one is "Yuzen".

"Kaga Yuzen" is one of the three major types of Yuzen in Japan.
Kaga is the current Ishikawa Prefecture (Kanazawa City is famous).
In fact, it is also my birthplace.

Today, I would like to talk about the color of Kaga Yuzen.
(I will talk about yuzen another time...!)

"Kaga Gosai" refers to the five colors that are said to be the basis of Kaga Yuzen.
( Gosai means Five Colors. )

藍(ai) Indigo
臙脂(enji) Crimson
黄土(oudo) Ocher
草(kusa) Dark Green
古代紫(kodai-murasaki) Royal Purple

Kanazawa is now a popular tourist spot, and the Kaga Gosai colors are used in various places, such as room decorations in hotels.
Each door of the Shinkansen platform at Kanazawa Station is colored in the Kaga Gosai (five colors of Kaga), and when the "Kagayaki" (indigo) arrives, all five colors will be present at station.

If you have a chance to visit Kanazawa in the future, why not look for Kaga Gosai in the city?
