In Japan, there is a period of continuous rainfall mainly around June. The beginning of this period is called “梅雨入り(Tsuyu-iri)” and the end of the rainy season is called “梅雨明け(Tsuyu-ake)."
Thus, “Tsuyu” is such a well-known term that it is used in news and weather forecasts.

There are various theories as to why it is written “梅雨” (plum rain).
Some say that it is because it is the time when plum fruits ripen, some say it is because it is the time when mold grows (kanji was later changed), and some say it is because it is “Tsuieru,” which means “to rot."

The rainy season is a time when frogs are often seen.
One of the characters in “My Hero Academia,” “蛙吹梅雨(Asui Tsuyu),” is also clearly inspired by the rainy season and frogs.
