About Kamon(Family Crest)
The family crest (kamon) is a traditional Japanese emblem used to identify individuals and families. There are 241 classifications and 5116 types of family crests in Japan, with a great variety of designs.
Family crests originated to distinguish powerful clans such as the Minamoto, Taira and Fujiwara clans from other members of the same clan, and eventually spread to the samurai (Buke) and court noble families (Kuge).
Family crests were used as an important symbol of the family of warlords and samurai during the Sengoku period, showing the pride of the family on the battlefield and in everyday life. Except in special cases, there were no restrictions on the use of family crests and they were widely used on cemeteries, furniture and ships. However, consideration was implicitly sought for the use of other families' family crests, as their indiscriminate use would cause friction.
The English words 'family crest' and 'crest', which function in a similar way to Western family crests, make it an interesting subject for overseas Japanese culture enthusiasts, samurai and warlord fans.
